I met Aba at Waterloo to catch the 12:10 Eurostar to Paris. As we were waiting to book in a familiar voice boomed out "Lion"! I turned to see Ras Muffet's smiling face.
"Are you going out or coming in," I asked.
"What! I am coming to the show. Didn't Aba tell you"?
It transpires that when Ras Muffet heard we were doing the show, he, Cat and sistren made plans to attend.
They were booked on the 11:40 and we on the 12:09. We all went through immigration and customs together and headed for the departure gate.
Gate 22 was out of commission, which meant a long walk to the far end, and they just made their train.
When we arrived at Garde Du Nord we were met by Nathalie and we put our bags into her car and set off to the hotel.
The last time we were in Paris the traffic was horrendous and it took nearly 30 minutes to get out of the centre of Paris. This time was no exception.
It seems that Paris is going for a similar public transport arrangement as London.
Roads restricted to all private vehicles except buses and taxi's in its central area. To this end they have started major road works to create bus lanes and to block streets. This has caused the living traffic congestion and it took nearly 40 minutes before we were out of the city centre.
We arrived at our hotel at 16:30 and after booking in we went to chill out in our rooms. We were going to be picked up at 20:00 to go to the venue to do the sound check.
At 17:30 someone banged on my door. When I opened it I came face to face with Winston Fergus who was looking for the room Aba was in. He was with King Earthquake who I found out had the room next to mine. Winston knocked on his door and Errol came out and we greeted each other. I watched as Errol's door closed as we chatted in the corridor.
"You do have your room key, Errol"? I asked.
Errol looked at me with a quizzical look and said "Yes man it is in the room".
I then had to inform Errol that the doors were auto locking and that now he was locked out of his room.
He would have to go to reception to get the porter to open his room with a passkey.
As Errol went off to reception I took Winston to Aba's room.
Aba and Winston go way, way back and I left them chatting and went back to chill in my room.

We were duly collected at the agreed time and all parties were conveyed to the venue.
When we arrive at the venue Nico of 'Blackboard Jungle' was still wiring up his set.
Aba and I went and greeted the crew from' Blackboard Jungle' as Errol and Winston looked around this rather unique venue.
After this we all went and had something to eat and prepare for the pre requite interviews and sound check.

The session was due to start at 23:00 and I went outside to check that Ras Muffet and all other names on our guest list didn't have any problems gaining entry. Security staff can be quite deaf and uncooperative when you try to explain to them that you are on a guest list.
I went out into the courtyard and the gates were still locked. It seemed that key to the lock had gone walkabout and no one knew where it was. I went up to the fence and peered through to see Ras Muffet and crew on the other side. The key took a few minutes to locate, but as soon as it was the gates were opened. There was a steady stream of people into the courtyard and I waited until Ras Muffet and crew were given their passes and I escorted them into the arena.
I took Ras Muffet backstage to the dressing room where Aba was listening back to the minidisk recording of the Israel session. Cat later joined us, as 'Blackboard Jungle' played the first section.
The running order was
23:00-00:45 'Blackboard Jungle' featuring African Simba
01:00-03:15 'King Earthquake' featuring Winston Fergus.
03:15-05:45 'Aba Shanti-I'
I went to see how full the venue was and also to check out 'Blackboard Jungle's'. He was rolling out a bass note dread and the venue was filling up nicely.
This was in stark contrast to the last time in Jan 2005 when he played well, but not with such force.
Ras Muffet was on my right hand side and watched as I winched when I heard the mids boxes on the stack to my right start boarding. (For those who are technical minded or just want to know: Boarding is when the speaker sounds like the cone is hitting the baffle board, but it is not. It is the cone deforming due to either the coil overheating and no longer travelling freely or the amp is clipping, sending a spike to the speaker. Either way the speaker or the amp or both will not last long.)

I listened to the set and as he started the latter stages of it he began running brand new dubplates.
The Revolutionaries (Sly and Robbie) bass line from the 70's relick, featuring Tenestelin and Culture Freeman is a nice tune, but then again I have always liked that bass pattern.
This ability to name that bass pattern in the first 5 notes always ticks off the new and old producers plus bass players of Roots music alike, and has got me into some heated debates with man telling me that the pattern is not copied, it is original. Seen!
That's until I bring out the original piece and play it back to them, then you get "Yeah, it is similar, but it is not the same".
My argument to that is if the tonic notes are the same and in the same order, the little 3 note link between the phrases does not constitute a new bass pattern, but a modification of the original.
This is what my mother used to call "Ah box bwoy face mek him no, him place" statement.

No disrespect to the man dem that are doing this, it is nice that some of them old but crucial bass patterns are getting dusted off and
revoiced for a whole new generation of Zion train (not the band) passengers to enjoy.
The best scenario would be that these classic patterns inspire a batch of new soon to become classic bass lines and tunes, because if you keep taking from the well without replenishing it with fresh water, the well will become stagnant. Jah Know!

'Blackboard Jungle' handed over to 'King Earthquake' and I watched as Errol went into full flow and then overdrive. With the bass causing the boxes to rattle I could see the tension on the face of Nico as he anxiously watched the power meters on his amps go into the red and stay there.
I nodded to Ras Muffet and went back to the dressing room.

Aba asked me what it was like out there. The place was ram I told him but I didn't hold out much hope for the amps or boxes to stay the course and I that he should go and see for himself. This Aba duly did.
I went back out and buck up on Aba and Muffet. Aba turned to me and raised his eyebrows.
"I know dread, my man Nico is panicking right now" I said to him as we watched Nico hover behind Errol with his eyes transfixed on his amps.
We all returned to the dressing room, for if Errol blew up my man's tings then we wouldn't get to play.

As we were sitting backstage chatting there was a knock at the door and a security man asked if we would vouch for this man and pointed to bredrin Jerome. We welcomed Jerome into the room and then much reasoning took place.

At 02:55 one of the production team came into the room and asked if we were ready to go on. I told him we were not due for another 35 minutes.
He returned 5 minutes later with another production person who spoke better English who informed us that Earthquake wanted us to start our set early as he was running out of dubs to play, and this tune we were hearing was his last. This made me smile for earlier on in the evening when we were having dinner Errol had told me that he had only brought dub plates with him and I thought he was joking.
So we went out to start our set.
Errol handed over to Aba and session began.

Aba started with the classics 'Chase The Devil / Iron Vest' by Max Romeo got a wild response, moved into the new roots and then started flinging down dub plate.
Just as the place was getting real hot, the bass amps shut down. Quick re jigging by Nico and the bass was restored. A few minutes later the hi mids and tops went, this took a lot longer to resolve so Aba played with just bass and low mids until normal service was restored.
We had a few of these shut down of amps as the hall was so hot and the amps didn't have additional cooling, so it was to be expected. I know that Nico thought we were overdriving his tings, but I can put hand on heart and say that we did not play the set as hard as Errol and not even as hard as Nico.
I had already warned Aba about the mids boarding and we didn't want the same situation as the last time, but we got it never the less.
But when normal service was resumed, we played mellow right up to the end and the crowd stayed right till the very last drop.
