En 1978, il commence sa carrière de chanteur en enregistrant à Channel One, « The tale of 2 cities ». En 1979, il enregistre avec Coxsone Dodd les titres « Why » et « Here i stand »,et avec Winston Riley les titres “Yes I feel it” et “I made a mistake”. Sa notoriété se répand dès lors dans l’industrie musicale jamaïcaine, et il établit sa renommé grâce à des productions de Sly and Robbie( « Trodding ») et Clive Jarrett( « Rumours »). En 1984, Livingston enregistre le classique « 100 weight of collie weed », avec Hyman Wright et Percy Chin au studio HCF. Cette chanson lui permet une certaine reconnaissance internationale et mène à la réalisation de son album ayant connu le plus de succès, « Fret dem a fret ».
Carlton sera backé par l’incontournable sound system parisien Soul Stéréo.
