Biography
Diego Emanuelsson aka Diegojah was born the 6 of oktober 1982 in Stockholm, Sweden . He grew up in Viksjö and Jakobsberg, both suburbs in Stockholm with people from all around the world. His father is from Sweden and his mother from Chile, who escaped from persecution and the military coup in Chile, September 1973.
Diegojah started out with music for the first time when he was around 14 years old, playing bass and guitar with different groups that were put together in school. After changing school two years later the interest for playing music cooled down a bit and he didn´t continue to play in bands. Around this time Diegojah´s reggaemusic journey started to develope. He inherited his older brother´s reggaevinylrecords and fell in love. The biggest idols were Bob Marley, Black Uhuru and Eek-A-Mouse. When he was 19 years old he moved in to the city and soon started to attend all kinds of reggaehappenings such as clubs and concerts. The year was 2001 and the big thing now for Diegojah was still rootsmusic and after attending all the clubs and cocerts around Stockholm the knowledge of the scene and music grew and so did his collection of records. He spent many hours in recordshops and slowly started to appreciate modern roots/dancehallmusic. When Sizzla released his album "Da real thing" in 2002 the love for new, modern reggae/dancehallmusic was a fact. In 2003 he got his first gig as a DJ, playing his favourite records in a café called Café Tubby, named after the great reggaelegend King Tubby.
In 2004 the will of creating his own music again got him into speaking to two of his friends who were recording hiphopmusic. When suggesting them to record a reggaetune he didn´t need to wait long for the answer.The making of the first reggaetune with Diegojah was in motion. The tune was called "Fire pon police".
The three friends, Sherm, Kalinariz and Diegojah formed the vocalgroup "Baylake Productions". All recordings were made in homestudios. With no real studio to record live instruments, all songs were recorded on famous riddims. After about a year the group gathered their best tunes and burned them down on 200 CD´s that were easily sold to friends and friends when performing in their old neighbourhood. After a while the interest cooled down a bit again but Diegojah was still a reggaemusicaddict and was still collecting records. In 2006 the three friends set up their "Rebel Youth Studio" together with Ras Cricket who Diegojah had met one year before. Now own riddims were getting produced. After a while another friend, Earlriddims became a member of the studiocollective and things now started to get more serious. Ras Cricket released a Rebel Youth Studioproduced album through internet, free for download and now some attention was drawn to the collective. While Sherm had been concentrating on producing and Kalinariz was out discovering the world, Diegojah wrote his first tune as a solo artist. The tune, "Feelings" featured on a mixtape called "Reggae Propaganda" with some of the most interesting and popular artists from scandinavia.
In 2007 Rebel Youth Studio released a mixtapealbum containing 7 tunes with Diegojah. Now Sweden knew about Diegojah and the gigs all over Sweden together with Ras Cricket became more and more . Diegojah is now one of the most frequent artist on the Swedish reggaescene.
With members dropping in and out of the Rebel Youth Studio, the collective is now called Rebel Youth Family, with a livebandsection.
While still a member of the Rebel Youth Family, Diegojah is recording with top producers from Sweden. And with the help of internet Diegojah is not only colaborating with people from outside Sweden, he now has fans all over the world. In the summer of 2008 he had two gigs at Poland´s biggest reggae festival; Ostroda Reggae Festival. He has performed at the biggest reggae festivals in Sweden, several times.
