« Reggae in the Rift Valley Festival is about creating an Annual International platform whereby the Adama and Shashemane communities of Ethiopia can be promoted and can earn extra incomes. As you know Shashemane is the famous land grant extended to the people of the black Diaspora and is now home to a multitude of Rastafarian repatriates.
By this festival we aim to display the culture of the Diaspora alongside the local communities, working towards common goals:
1. To use multicultural entertainment as a means to promote tourism in the Oromia region.
2. To serve as an annual platform to fund raise and promote ongoing community development projects.
3. To give youth a platform to promote themselves.
4. To provide employment opportunities for community members.
5. To provide local businesses & non profit organizations an opportunity to be displayed / earn extra incomes.
6. To provide an occasion whereby networking can be established for local community members with the Diaspora thus fostering more understanding: It is highly supported by government officals at a regional level and at a Federal Tourism Level.
Our next festival is planned to take place on December 9th-11th 2011 in Shashemane. Highlights of events scheduled this December include: a community bazaar & exhibition, a football tournament for under 14’s and 16’s that will involve the participation of 288 youths starting July with the finals taking place on the festival dates, an Iron Lion mountain bike marathon to Wondo Genet, family fun, excursions into Shashemane, dj sessions with an international lineup of musical performances every night.
As our Number 1 aim is to use the music to promote the Shashemane community and youth within the region, 50% of proceeds from this event will be divided among the following beneficiaries:
a. The Jamaican Rastafarian Community Development School in Shashemane.
b. The Abdi Boru Child friendly youth Center in Shashemane, who are responsibly working to support orphans in Shashemane and provide youth with various job skill training opportunities.
c. The Bright Millennium Youth Committee, who promote youth initiatives, greenery projects, tourism and sanitation awareness programs in the region
d. The Enga Lenga Youth Association in Shashemane
e. The RYTS (Rastafari Youth Theatre Shashemane)
