The members of Danakil are launching their label, Baco Records. A new step in their independent journey, and a chance to launch the solo career of their accomplice Natty Jean. Mathieu, the band's saxophonist and manager, tells us all about it.
The creation of Baco Records is nothing more nor less than a logical next step: "It's the desire to go further in self-production and independence, explains Mathieu, the band's saxophonist, who also wears the hats of team leader and manager. It's also the wish to work differently, as we did with Danakil by giving away 30,000 albums to those who came to see us on tour."
Baco Records was officially launched six months ago. And what could be more natural than to inaugurate the label's catalogue by giving Natty Jean his solo debut? The Senegalese artist has been joining them on stage ever since they met in Mali during the recording of their latest album, "Echos du Temps"…
"It had been at the back of our minds for a long time, Mathieu continues. For Natty Jean, we had even approached labels a year ago, but record companies are cautious, or else they offer crazy deals. So we went for it, and Natty Jean's album will give the label a very interesting artistic colour."
Produced by Manjul at his Humble Ark in Mali, the album had been ready for some time. It was only waiting for serious partners. Manjul, who had come to play percussion with Danakil, put the idea to them. The rest is history...
On tour since early March to promote this new album, Natty Jean is backed on stage by... Danakil. From April on (as at La Cigale in Paris on Saturday 10 March), it is the Humble Ark Band, with Manjul at the helm, who will set the show to music.
Brahim's third opus
And the projects do not stop there. In April, Brahim's third opus will be released, entitled "Sans haine". Produced and arranged by Brahim and Kubix, the album will also feature appearances by Nuttea and Pierpoljak. "It's a bit like a fresh start for him. A tour is being prepared. We want to make sure this album finds the success its predecessor deserved."
In time, Baco Records will release the new Danakil album. And will truly cement the independence of the champions of French reggae.
