01 About

Daddy Mory, the bride of France. Still fightin' since Raggasonic !

Daddy Mory is of Malian (paternal) and Martinican (maternal) origin. He was born in Paris, in the 14th arrondissement. His family then moved to Ivry-sur-Seine (94), where he spent his teenage years. He was influenced very early by Caribbean music and recorded his first dubplate at the age of 16 for the sound system Blues Party. He took the name Daddy Mory in tribute to Mory Kanté. In the late 80s, he was alongside the rappers Kafir and Fedo (La Brigade) in the group Drop the Lyrics. In 1990, he was behind the Soundjata Sound System, sharing the mic with a certain Big Red.

Following this meeting, the Raggasonic adventure began. The duo placed their singles among the best sellers (Bleu, Blanc, Rouge, Faut pas me prendre pour un âne, J'entends parler du Sida). Raggasonic proved just as effective on stage, backed by the Ruff Cut Band. Two albums and a best of released in 2004 make up the group's discography. Each album sold more than 200,000 copies. Relations with Big Red deteriorated and their paths drifted further and further apart. Daddy Mory admits that 1999 was a sad year. He spent 4 months in prison in the French West Indies for possession of marijuana. He made the most of his detention and wrote a few lyrics. When he got out, he discovered Big Red's solo album, "Big Redemption". From there, Daddy Mory, for his part, threw himself into uncompromising dancehall. He readily cites Sizzla and Capleton as references. He went back underground, playing sound systems. In the meantime, life gave him a child.

Daddy Mory signed with BMG in 2000, but his first album only came out in 2003: "Ma voix résonne". It was the great comeback of Daddy Mory, after 6 years away. He created his label "Atomik Dogz" and produced the album himself, with featurings from Busta Flex and the Saïan Supa Crew. Daddy Mory sees himself as a Rastaman and makes music for Jah and for the people. Resolutely attached to his roots, he often evokes the Independence of the French West Indies. His themes are chosen from the reggae music repertoire, such as Rasta concerns, the ceaseless fight against Babylon and African roots. But he is also capable of lighter lyrics written exclusively for the dancefloors. In 2004, he recorded a duet with Soumia, blending his dancehall with the singer's R'n'B. Since 2000, he has been very present on dancehall compilations (Dis l'heure2ragga, Kisdés) and one riddim albums such as the Axxxia or the Savage. His first DVD, "Burning Zone" (High Level), came out in early 2005. A next album is expected for 2006.
