On the occasion of his European tour, Buju Banton was passing through France to play a few concerts, to promote his latest album " Unchained Spirit ", whose sales unfortunately are failing to take off. While Buju Banton is making notable appearances on certain singles in Jamaica, his producer Donovan Germaine (of the Penthouse label) has just announced that his next album will be 100 % dancehall.
"What the hardcore artists are doing right now is so soft compared with the songs I made around 1992. That is what pushed me to come back to the forefront this year"
For him "Unchained Spirit" represents a stage of maturity, a stage of his life that he has reached and which describes him on the album; he now wants to continue his musical path with something different.
Asked about the fact that he had not been nominated this year for the famous Tamika Awards (which reward the year's artists and albums), he declared that he could not be present at this ceremony every year, and that even if he was not there this year he holds nothing against anyone and will know it in the years to come.
Buju also expressed his displeasure that the Epitaph label had not honoured their contract by failing to make the video for a song from the album as agreed, which in his eyes considerably reduced its promotion.
He recently produced a song by his long-time companion Wayne Wonder, due out this summer on his "Gargamel" label, on a riddim made by the youngest son of King Jammys: John 2.
