After Marseille with Lion Roots and Aba Shanti I, the Télérama Dub Festival continued its itinerary in the south of France and dropped anchor in Montpellier this weekend.
This time, an unprecedented meeting awaited fans of the dub rendezvous: like the Erik Truffaz / Kaly Live Dub reunion in 2006, the Télérama Dub Festival continues a policy of varied shows with artists from all backgrounds. For this new stop, the bill brings together Love Trio and U-Roy, the exceptional meeting of three American musicians (keyboardist-saxophonist Ilhan Ersahin, bassist Jesse Murphy and drummer Kenny Wollesen) drawn to sonic experimentation on the edge of jazz, and the father of Jamaican deejays, U-Roy.
Yet when we arrive at the Rockstore, the hall is still quite empty, which bodes ill. When Love Trio take the stage around 9.30pm, the crowd is nowhere to be seen and the band begins its performance in front of an almost empty hall. The first pieces played, very experimental, give Ilhan Ersahin fertile ground on which to build a free jazz performance, far from the well-trodden paths of dub. When U-Roy begins his turn on the mic, the crowd is already won over by the performance of the three American musicians. The tracks follow one another in an inimitable style of dub jazz fusion.
But the poor turnout got the better of the Montpellier stop of the Télérama Dub Festival: we only get a 45-minute performance with no encore, the group's saxophonist even coming to apologise, claiming that the Rockstore management wanted to close up to prepare for their regular Thursday nights. It is therefore with bitterness that the crowd leaves the hall barely an hour later. This very interesting event was perhaps too avant-garde to achieve real success in a city where the reggae scene is very present. Risk-taking (unfortunately) does not always pay off.
