Jamaica Voted Obama
 |
Yes we can! Barack Obama has become the 44th President of the United States. Historic, his candidacy and election stirred up an enthusiasm rarely seen in Uncle Sam's country around its elections. During the campaign, Barack Obama enjoyed the support of a great many artists. In Hollywood, that is rather common for a Democratic candidate. It is far less so when the support pours in from Jamaica. To round it all off, Barack Obama declared himself a "reggae fan"... A quick tour of the artists who backed him in song.
TONY REBEL feat. QUEEN IFRICA & NIKKI BURT – Black man redemption
Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica and Nikki Burt chose to cover Bob Marley's Black man redemption to pay tribute to the new US president.
SIZZLA – Black man in the white house
"To the first black president of the USA, we show our respect and our gratitude" Sizzla begins, playing with words on the first black president to move into the White House. "An example to follow", the deejay continues.
MICHAEL ROSE – This is history
Over a dubious riddim, the former lead of Black Uhuru celebrates the victory of the senator from Illinois. This is far from Michael Rose's best, but it is for a good cause.
DETERMINE - Come to pass
Determine did not pick the lightest of riddims to celebrate Barack Obama's election, but a big dancehall instrumental, heavy and haunting.
CAPLETON – People want change
"The people want change!" proclaims Capleton on his best track in a long time. The deejay, who lambasts Bush for his quest for Osama that he cannot find, and calls on Obama to pull out of Iraq, takes the opportunity in passing, in one rhyme, to suggest a measure to him: legalise marijuana.
COCOA TEA – Barack Obama
He is the Jamaican artist who took the most explicit stance for the Democratic candidate. His track Barack Obama, which has been circulating for a while, was the first single from an album entitled "Yes we can" (his campaign slogan), released on 4 November 2008.
STEEL PULSE – Obama
"I&I are chanting for Barack Obama" intones Steel Pulse. For the British band there is no doubt: he is the one who will put "the country in the right direction", the one who "will fight for justice and stop corruption".
MAVADO – We want Barack
Mavado revisits the lyrics of his hit I'm on the rock (on Baby G's Mission Riddim), dedicating it to Barack Obama: "We need Barack, the people dem a cry, Jehovah guide him… We need Barack".
Screwdriver – Jah send him come
"Tired of war", Screwdriver had left it to Jah to see Barack Obama elected, "the man of the future". With his election, racism will decline, he hopes on this successful nyabinghi.
AND ALSO:
WINSTON FRANCIS – A change is gonna come
Winston Francis covers Sam Cooke's hit A Change is gonna come here, which became the anthem of Barack Obama's election.
MIGHTY SPARROW – Barack the magnificent
LUSHY BANTON - Obama
COMMANDER JESSE – You got to vote Obama
JANGO FRESH FEAT. BOOM VINIYARD – Change
