After the « CLEAN VIBES RIDDIM », the French label SPECIAL DELIVERY MUSIC is back with a second one riddim album entitled « STORM ALARM RIDDIM ». Another original riddim, produced by BOST & BIM and mixed in Kingston at Anchor studio (Music Works) by Barry O’Hare.
On the project front, the French label is not standing still: we hear they are working on several album projects on the side, notably the new opus from QUEEN OMEGA, « Destiny », due in September, as well as the eagerly awaited one from Lyricson in October.
As you will have gathered, the SD Music team is not done making waves!!!
We went to meet Pierre and JP, the label's two founders, who talk to us about the making of the album and the relationships they have with some of the artists in the crew.

Reggaefrance: How did the « STORM ALARM » come about?? Is Special Delivery a 100% roots label???
SDM: The Storm was born a year ago. Gentleman was the first artist to lay a voice on it, then we went to Jamaica and had the yardies voice it, and back in France the French artists. The STORM ALARM carries on from the CLEAN VIBES in terms of artists and producers. The riddim is faster, but it stays reggae.
We won't only do reggae, but it's true that it's more our sauce than dancehall, because when you produce reggae you're more likely to get the artist to record a real song with sensible, positive words. In dancehall, the artist captures more of the vibes of the day, so the result can be top or not. He can, for example, write you a lyric that goes with a dance, but then he has to find a new one the next day to entertain the dancehalls. We prefer roots for these reasons, but the future is full of surprises!!
How did the connection and the recording go with the following artists??
Tony Rebel: We met him two years ago during his tour of France with LMS. At that time he had just recorded the tune « Poison & Medicine ». We kept the link, and since Tony doesn't voice for just anybody, it's a kind of privilege for us that he likes our riddims. He is, along with Terry Ganzie, one of the first conscious deejays, and we've loved his tunes for years, like « Too Much Gun Talk » ….. So we're keeping the connection and we hope to do more things with him and Queen Ifrica. We recorded at Computer Paul's in Kingston this time, big vibes!!!
Ras Shiloh: He is Garnet Silk's representative on earth today, and as a Garnet fan it's a pleasure to work with Shiloh. The brother is nice, we did tunes with him and his brethren Jah Barry. He's our age, he lives between Kingston and New York, and we got on really well. His tune is big, and he has worked with big producers, so we're proud to produce him; he has an album at Penthouse and another coming out soon at Digital B. We recorded him the same evening as Tony Rebel, it was nice!!!
Gentleman: We've known each other for a while; we sent him a CD with riddims when he started working on his album after the release of « Journey to Jah ». He was going on tour, loved this riddim and played the tune all over Europe. It's the original track of the series. The track was recorded in Germany. Gentleman is nice and his team is bad, so we hope to do more things with them.
Alpheus: He's a Studio One artist we met when he came to promote his album in France quite some time ago. We kept the link and started working with him. We have almost a whole album with him, which we hope to release in early 2005. He's a wicked singer, the only one who wrote a love tune on the series. He really has an original style, and as the late Coxsone Dodd used to say, « Alpheus has a real personality and that's what will take him far ». We recorded in Paris when he came to work on the album.
Lyricson: We met shortly after he arrived in France and did shows together. He's bad; we hoped to have him on the Clean Vibes, he finally voiced the STORM ALARM and we're working on his album at the moment. He has enormous potential.
His track is really bad, the lyrics are powerful and he sings very well. It's one of the best tunes of the series, we think.
Matinda: He's been working with Bost & Bim for quite a few years, so we crossed paths more often on the football pitch than in the studio. When we did the « CLEAN VIBES », he was there, and for the « STORM ALARM » he's the first one we called, because every time he drops us a good tune and we have a good vibe with the LION. Blessed!!
Difanga: We'd been hearing him for a long time, but it was through Mad Killa that we connected. We want to keep more or less the same team because it went well and because we like what he does; he's a real singer and a real character.
Chadness: We met him through Lyricson. He has a strong personality and is about to turn things upside down! He had really taken to the CLEAN VIBES and was keen to voice the Storm. The artist is strong and motivated, so we had him voice the riddim straight away. He's part of the Black Unit crew, which has plenty of talent. Besides, we know Chadness will defend his tune on stage because he's at ease on stage.
Francky: Same thing, we've been crossing paths for a long time with Francky and his Party Time team. Francky works a lot and really has the vibes of a reggae singer. He's reliable, so he was on the first riddim and he'll surely be on the next one.
What, in your view, is the biggest difference between Yardie artists and local ones???
We think the way of working is a bit different; let's say the yardies are more reliable, and that helps them when they get into the studio: the guys need to work less to drop something good. Some French artists are getting close to that level, but there's still an ocean between the two, because reggae culture in France isn't as developed and many French artists aren't in the studio often enough.
The other criticism we'd make of local artists is the writing: look at rappers, they rack their brains, so deejays must rack theirs too. Jamaicans are more poetic as well, maybe it's natural???
And what are your next projects???
The « STORM ALARM » came out at the end of July in specialist record shops, then we release QUEEN OMEGA's fourth album, « Destiny », in September, and LYRICSON's first album, which we're preparing with our brothers at Animals Son, for October. So there's work to do, it's bad!!!
