The little island of St Croix is the birthplace of a modern, finely crafted, fresh roots reggae. The new Jamaica? And why not? This new cradle, active since the late 80s, has more than one thing in common with its big Caribbean sister. A tour of the St Croix seam.
South of Puerto Rico, in the Lesser Antilles archipelago shared between Great Britain and the United States, three islands make up the US Virgin Islands. St Croix, St Thomas and St John have been American since 1917, bought from Denmark for 26 million dollars after 50 years of negotiations. Such determination was down to their strategic position, which allows control of the main passage of the Caribbean Sea commanding access to the Panama Canal. Their economy is driven by tourism: cruise ships call in there. Two million tourists visit every year. The music they can hear there ranges from hip hop to R&B, but also calypso and gospel. For some time now, a new, strong and combative vibration has been developing in the Virgin Islands, and in St Croix in particular.Yet the largest of the three islands covers only 212 km² (an area smaller than that of the Creuse département!). The island has passed from hand to hand through the seven successive colonisations of the archipelago: Holland, Spain, Great Britain, Malta, France, Denmark and finally the United States, which still holds a veto over the local government today. A turbulent past, a real breeding ground for creativity, which recalls that of Jamaica. The Arawak Indians lived in the Virgin Islands before being driven out by Christopher Columbus. Hence a deeply rooted tradition of rebellion. With historic local figures who fought against slavery and for the black condition, some pages of Virgin Islands history recall Jamaican rebellions such as Morant Bay. In 1733, on St John, a violent slave rebellion forced the overwhelmed Danes to ask the French for help. Coming from Martinique, they managed to restore order and put the plantations back in working condition. On St Croix, a Black slave named Queen Mary led a rebellion as a result of which the town of Frederiksted was burned to the ground.
Other personalities have a direct link with Jamaica, such as Edward Wilmot Blyden, a friend of Marcus Garvey. As in Jamaica, the Virgin Islands have developed local patois fed by French, Dutch and English through successive colonisations, and using completely different grammars.
An overdeveloped music scene
While Jamaica was still mourning Bob Marley and the world was turning away from reggae, roots took hold in St Croix in the mid-80s, with the formation of groups such as Inner Visions and Midnite. Since 1999, reggae fans have noticed that the name of this island keeps coming up. For the reggae scene has grown considerably. Local artistic activity once again recalls a neighbouring island a few years ago. At a time when Jamaica listens to nothing but dancehall, St Croix looks well set to become the next Mecca of roots / nu-roots.The music scene there is overdeveloped, and particularly prolific. A veritable tap of young talent, groups and solo artists seem to appear in cascades. The small size of the island favours artistic exchanges, which multiply, creating an effervescence conducive to creation. A music scene of astonishing dynamism, especially considering the island's population - no more than 100,000 inhabitants.
The sound played in St Croix is of rare quality; deeply roots, it remains specific to the island. The styles are in fact quite varied: rockers, roots, stepper, one drop, but also many forays into dancehall and new-roots. The pure creation is of high quality, taking new and innovative directions. Each artist has their own specialities, which makes the reggae scene even more varied and attractive: you will love Ras Attitude for his sharp dancehall or Batch for the range of his vocal abilities. But none of them confines himself to one style. The singers, singjays and musicians of St Croix wield a deep, sincere reggae with a strong identity. The island's past, the dimension of the Rastafarian faith and the local context are all reasons why every artist shows a desire to resurrect the original 'One Love', and is keen to write conscious lyrics. The scene is also solidly occupied by female artists (Mada Nile, Sistah Joyce, or Dezarie), which can only be welcomed when listening to their albums.

Page 2 : St Croix: the roots revival
Despite these qualities, the obstacles are very real. There are not many places or clubs where you can hear music. Despite the seriousness of the studio work, distribution is still a problem for most artists. Their low airtime on local radio does not help. To make up for these shortcomings, the artists wear many hats. The label Sound V.I.Zion Records was founded by Julian 'Batch' Cumberland, himself an artist in one of the island's first groups: "The Motion". Sound V.I.Zion has signed Mada Nile, Ras Attitude, Batch, Dezarie and Ambassada, as well as pioneering compilations such as “Culturellenium" in 1999. In the same way, the group Midnite created its own structure in 2000: Afrikan Roots Lab. Another means: massive use of the web, so that albums can be heard and bought. St Croix thus enjoys wide exposure on the Internet through the sites of its major labels, but we can also mention the bible www.vireggae.com
Because of its island status, St Croix has had to create its own network for the creation, broadcasting, promotion and distribution of local artists' music. The creation of labels is relatively recent and has accelerated since the creative explosion of 1999-2000. There are now about ten labels (Ground Breaking, Iyah Ites, Ground Control, Blue Bitch, Glamorous, Rastafaria, Black Juice, Sound V.I.Zion, Umojah Productions, Splatter House, L.P). The heavyweights are I Grade Records, Mt. Nebo, Afrikan Roots Lab and SPM. Other St Croix labels are based in the United States. Uncle Sam's country is, incidentally, gradually being won over by the sound of this little island with enormous musical potential. A new Jamaica, with identical seeds. The future will tell us whether the trajectories are the same. Since 2002, the Virgin Islands Reggae Sumfest has been held.St Croix is getting closer
Be that as it may, St Croix reggae, long kept in the underground of the studios, is being exported and should carve out a choice place on the international scene. In France, there is currently no official distributor of St Croix music. Only the Paris-based association Jahnoy (/i">/i) distributes I Grade Records productions, and the shop run by Abubakar and Pharoah (Nantes) is the only one to offer a few St Croix artists. The phenomenon is drawing nearer. Word has it that the group Bambu Station, signed to Mt.Nebo, is preparing a French tour. Dezarie and Ikahba will soon arrive with a new solo album on Afrikan Roots Lab. In addition, Mt. Nebo has just released a compilation bringing together 13 artists. Among them, new artists! You can discover Black Culture, Ibednego, Ijah Menelik, members of the Star Lion Family... The world is going to have to prepare itself for the massive sound made in St Croix.
Some St Croix artists:
Abja, Army, Bambu Station, Batch, Danny, De Apostle, Dezarie, Donny Dread, Iba, Ikahba, Inner Visions, Jahcob Seed, Jahman, Mada Nile, Masta Chang, Midnite, Mystical Youth, Pressure, Ras Attitude, Ron Benjamin, Sabbattical Ahdah, Sistah Joyce, Star Lion Family, The Great Abu, Umojah, Yahadanai...

BATCH
Julian 'Batch' Cumberbatch was born in St Croix. He came into contact with music very early on. We find him as drummer for the veteran roots singer Danny Tucker. With his two brothers (Eddie 'IDE' and Reggie 'IGE') he formed his first group in Boston: The Motion. The group won the 'best reggae band' prize at the Boston Caribbean festival five years running, then toured the United States. Batch founded the label Sound V.I.Zion Records in 1999 with Bryan 'Ras Attitude' Goodwin, another artist who had proved himself. The label claims music for the spirit, 'strictly consciousness'.
Batch has taken part in many projects, including featurings on albums by artists such as Ras Attitude and Mada Nile, as well as an album with Midnite: "He is Jah". Batch released his first solo album "Who you are" in 2003 on his own label, then the very successful "Keep the Faith" the following year. He is at once singer, producer and musician, and is one of the island's essential figures. Simply and humbly devoted, his music is turned towards the Almighty. He advocates a positive message of peace, love and unity. His first LP was a collective compilation, "Culturelllenium", released in 1999. Batch's message advocates peace, love and unity. Rasta themes are widely represented, illustrating the faith that is omnipresent in his career.

YAHADANAI
A Guyanese deejay, Yahadanai lives in New York and works with the label I Grade Records in St Croix.
His first release was his duet with Abja, another member of the island stable, on his album "Inna Red I Hour" (Pass De Kahn). The combination of the two voices lets Yahadanai shine, and his performance stood out.
In 2004, we find him on Donny Dread's album "Set De Pace", in a featuring with X-Kaliba (See & Know). But 2004 is above all the year of the release of his first album, "One Atonement". Produced by Laurent "Tippy" Alfred of I Grade Records in St Croix, it features the precise, polished arrangements for which the label is known. A veritable setting for Yahadanai's dazzling voice, which undulates between singing and deejaying.

MADA NILE
M. Maymard, alias Mada Nile, is a native of the island of St Croix. She grew up in the ghettos of the 'Paradise Project' with her nine brothers and sisters. Her mother had her listen to artists such as Israel Vibration, Bob Marley and Lucky Dube. Very early on she revealed herself as a musician and tried to make music with anything that came to hand. Then, after university, she chose to go solo, seeing it as an opportunity to express her Rasta message.
Mada Nile has great qualities and is capable of the best toasts as well as inspired singing. Her rather husky, controlled timbre, her flow and her lyrics make her an accomplished artist. Together with Dezarie and Sistah Joyce, she helps to give another image of female reggae. In 2001, Mada Nile joined Batch's label, Sound V.I.Zion Records, and recorded her first track "Worry no more", which turned up the following year on the compilation "Culturellenium II".
In 2003, she placed the conscious "Another day" on the maxi "The Life" alongside Batch, Ras Attitude and Ambassda. Her first album "Rise Today" came out in 2004 on the label Sound V.I.Zion Records. It was very well received, notably the track "Send I de Love", which has been squatting in the Virgin Islands charts. Her reggae, signed Batch, is deep, roots and very contemporary. Mada Nile's message aims to be positive and she is keen to represent African mothers and mothers around the world. She has shared stages with Beres Hammond, Capleton and Tanya Stephens, not to mention numerous collaborations with local artists.

DEZARIE
Dezarie is one of the many revelations of St Croix. An outstanding vocalist, she made her name with successful appearances on compilations and albums. In 2001, she featured on Midnite Branch I's album "Nemozian Rasta". The following year, she appeared on the compilations "Culturellenium II", "Weep Not" and "Talkin'Roots". Above all, she delivered her first album "Fya" on the label I Grade Records. The group Midnite plays as backing band on it. Released in 2002, this first opus was produced by Laurent 'Tippy' Alfred.
Alongside Mada Nile and Sistah Joyce, Dezarie asserts a reggae that is as roots and laid-back as it is militant and inspired. In 2003, she re-released her collaboration with the group Midnite and confirmed her talent with the magnificent "Gracious Mama Africa". Dezarie writes her lyrics focusing on conscious themes. With the originality of her writing, her vocal lines and her absolutely clear timbre, she cannot fail to win over roots fans. Her inspiration comes from the 70s. Unlike most St Croix artists, her reggae aims to be rawer, without digital additions.

MIDNITE
Midnite was formed in the 90s by the two Benjamin brothers: Ron and Vaughn. The group is one of the island's most acclaimed. Midnite is made up of five members: Philip Merchant (bass), Dion Hopkins (drums), Abijah (guitar), Ron Benjamin (artistic director and keyboards) and lead vocalist Vaughn Benjamin. Midnite has forged a solid reputation in conscious reggae. As authentic Rastas, their music is dedicated to the Almighty. Where you might expect the roots reggae also known as Jah Jah Music, their music is openly cross-over. Borrowing from dub, hip hop, roots, dancehall and so on, it is hard to classify.
Their first album "Unpolished" came out in 1997, when the group was based in Washington DC. In 1999, their collaboration with Wildchild! Rec. led them to record the album "Ras Mek Peace" (with no added effects and on two tracks!). The group's talent logically asserted itself. Midnite then decided to return to St Croix, a return that would stimulate the island's musical activity. They organised themselves and created the label Afrikan Roots Lab in 2000. "Jubilees of Zion" is their 3rd album and came out that same year. With each album, Midnite progresses and constantly renews itself musically. The Benjamin brothers experiment and blend all sorts of elements, producing music inspired by Jamaica but original in form. "Seek Knowlegde before Vengeance" came out in 2002 and "Intense Pressure" the following year. This dubbed album is one of the best of its kind on an island that rarely practises dub. It is the group's first dub album.
Under the name Midnite, the group has released 7 albums to date. The last two are "Scheme A Things" and "Ainshant Maps" in 2004. Midnite also records with a modified line-up under the names Midnite Branch I (6 albums) and Midnite I Grade (4 albums). Under the latter name, the group signed the album "Nemozian Rasta" in 2001, on which the female artist Dezarie appears. The last album released for I Grade is the acclaimed "Let Live". Midnite has come a long way, with several tours in North America, Western Europe, Brazil, Puerto Rico and St Croix of course. Midnite's message is resolutely conscious and Rasta. A little musical pearl of the US Virgin Islands. Midnite is one of the most creative groups of the moment and, although heavily inspired by Jamaica, it offers a new approach to reggae in the broadest sense.

RAS ATTITUDE
Ras Attitude began his career in the 90s on the island of St Croix. He is one of the first artists of Sound V.I.Zion Records. He features on all the label's compilations, such as the 2 volumes of "Culturellenium" in 2000 and 2001 and the maxi "The Life" in 2003 alongside Mada Nile, Batch and Ambassada. He signed the first solo album released on Sound V.I.Zion Records in 2001 with "Happiness".
We discover a versatile artist at ease in different styles. Digital dancehall programming such as the track "Pop Off" is convincing in the genre. He is also capable of the most beautiful singing on acoustic ballads such as "All we need" or other lover's tunes. This first album ends on a rare pearl: "Glorious", bewitching and simple, suggesting that what follows will be... glorious. After several guest spots on albums, such as Mada Nile's, Ras Attitude released his second solo album "Love Life" in 2004. It proves even more accomplished and establishes Ras Attitude as an essential name in St Croix. He claims influences ranging from Sizzla to Burning Spear by way of Capleton.
