Stanley Beckford at the Zèbre (Paris)
|
Reggaefrance.com attended Stanley Beckford's private concert at the Zèbre in Belleville on 10 May 2004, organised by the labels Tôt ou tard and Calaloo Records and the newspaper Libération on the occasion of the release of " Reggaemento " and Stanley Beckford's summer tour.
In the hushed atmosphere of the Zèbre, we were treated to a very fine performance by one of the veterans of Jamaican music. The ambassador of mento was accompanied by his band, The Blueglades, a four-piece line-up: Nelson Chambers on banjo, Kenneth Burrell on rhumba box, Phamas Hamilton on guitar and Randal Whyte on tambourine. We saw Stanley Beckford in great form, performing the whole of his new album, a chance to hear live his latest reggae covers: " Israelites ", " Oh Jah Jah " and his medley " 007 Shanty Town/I'll never grow old ". To our great pleasure, Stanley Beckford also played many of his own tunes, with titles such as " Big Bamboo ", " Rich Man " and the unmissable 1975 hit " Soldering ", taken from the previous album " Stanley Beckford plays mento ". At the age of 62, Stanley appeared very cheerful and never stopped thanking the audience for their support. After a set of an hour and a half, the band was called back for 3 extra numbers. Of note, the performance of Randal Whyte (backing vocals and tambourine), a character as talented as he is zany! A concert full of energy for a band whose average age must be around 55 (!). Stanley Beckford & the Blueglades are currently touring all summer; go and see them, if only to immerse yourself again in the roots of Jamaican music. As Stanley told us in interview: " Mento is di original! "
