01 About

Considered the creator of the waterhouse style, Michael Rose joined Black Uhuru after Don Carlos left. His solo career is marked by some twenty albums.

Michael Rose was born on 11 July 1958 in Waterhouse, JA. Unable to continue his studies at Saint George College, he was introduced to the music scene by his eldest brother Joseph. Blessed with a beautiful voice, Michael very often met musicians, writers and producers such as Dennis Brown, John Holt, Big Youth, the Wailers, Niney the Observer, Gregory Isaacs and Sly and Robbie. Very early on, these names fed his talent.

Niney The Observer was the first to notice Michael Rose's potential and produced his first recording, which includes Love Between Us, Freedom Over Me and Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner. In tracks such as General Penitentiary, Sensemilla and Shine Eye Gal, the intensity of Michael Rose's music and the depth of emotion delivered by his unique voice were essential factors for the legendary group Black Uhuru. The group opened the door to the international circuit and reached its peak with a Grammy Award win for the album Anthem in 1984. It was the first time a reggae group had won such a prize. It was after bringing the trophy back to Jamaica that Michael Rose decided to pursue a solo career. From then on, he split his time between writing, recording and touring. He released his first solo album "Demonstration" on his label Grammy Rose, then "Bogus Badge". But it was by signing with RCA Records that Mykal Rose truly exploded. In the early 90s, two albums were produced: "Proud" and "Bonanza". Then in 1993, Michael Rose teamed up with Sly and Robbie again. This union produced a series of singles including Mr Mention, Monkey, Visit Them and Bad Boys.

In 1995 Michael Rose made an explosive comeback in the eyes of the public. He had great success with reggae singles, but the most important change that year came in April, when he signed with Heartbeat Records and released his first solo album in the United States, simply titled "Michael Rose", which features the huge Short Temper. In 1996 he left on an international tour. That same year he released the album "Be Yourself", then "Nuh Carbon" on Greensleeves. Michael Rose remains one of the most in-demand reggae artists. He lends his voice to many Jamaican labels such as Star Trail and Brickwell, which keeps him very close to his earliest Jamaican fans. His voice appeals to both the traditional roots reggae audience and the contemporary dancehall audience. The albums "Dance Wicked" and "Dub Wicked" are an illustration of this.
