A little over a year after the album "African Roots", Michael Rose and Ryan Moore (Twilight Production) are back with "Warrior", the obvious sequel to the project: same washed-out sleeve, same legendary musicians, same studios, but 10 new tracks. As on "African roots", the link with the Black Uhuru sound is openly embraced, with slow, massive roots instrumentals, laced with dub and rock guitar.

The impression is confirmed by the reinforcement on vocals of Dean Frazer and Rochelle Bradshaw (backing singer for Luciano, among others) on several tracks. The title track that opens the album and Youth nowadays thus offer proper Black Uhuru ersatz, which remain quite tasty in the end.

Vocally, Michael Rose seems at ease and even shows a certain facility, as on Zion or Solid ground, a little more forceful. It must be said that this veteran masters this type of repertoire particularly well. Some compositions also catch the attention, such as Longtime, a hymn to the dancehall ("Long time we deh ya / Long time we nah lef the dance"), Them a look with its syncopated rhythm, Dangerous and its full horn section, A little bit more, revisiting the World a music riddim Binghi-style, or the dubby Nature that closes this opus.

Just like "African roots", this 10-track record is quite short but bets on a homogeneous sound. The interest of "Warrior" is therefore to be able to be set alongside its predecessor, for a complete view of Ryan Moore's work with Michael Rose. Without being revolutionary, this new album made of good old recipes will surely satisfy those who enjoyed "African roots".

Bon album.
