Although he has lived in the United States for more than ten years, Midnite remains the reference for reggae "made in St Croix" and is even its recent ambassador in France since his remarkable appearance at Ja'Sound last year. Unlike "Let Live", which incorporated a few hip-hop elements, "Jah Grid" remains entirely acoustic. Those who dived into their meditative reggae this summer will find again that natural mysticism, which owes as much to Benjamin Vaughn's feverish delivery as to the subtle arrangements of Tippy of I Grade Records.

The fifth collaboration in as many years between the island label and the exiled band, "Jah Grid" opens with the aptly named Enter, ideal as an introduction to this new opus. The fragile rustle of the cymbal, swept away by the heavy bass the following bar. Then there are the arrangements, meticulous and polished. And finally Vaughn's singing, with its mystical, rapid and fluid delivery, like a preacher. "Open the door of Jah and enter", he repeats endlessly, chanting his lyrics over a broad, powerful sound carpet, at once crushed by the bass and lifted by an airy keyboard and guitar pairing. My Joy, Royal Habits or Third Eye, counterbalanced by Jah Rubal's toast, are just as inspired, somewhere between furious determination and religious calm.

From prayers to incantations, Vaughn's singing tightens into a haunting litany (Before I loose my strength or The Bringers) and his jazzy piano, which will carry some away as much as it leaves others cold. But which undeniably underlines, once again, all the talent of these two references of the St Croix sound.
