Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell is unquestionably one of the most influential musicians and producers of British reggae in the 70s and 80s. Bovell, best known in France as LKJ's bassist, returns with a series of reissues that illustrates an overflowing creativity and a musical quality still intact. A reissue of a 1986 album recorded with his group The Dub Band, "Audio Active" was a daring reggae album in its day, even if twenty years on, it has not always aged well.

"Audio Active" is not a dub album strictly speaking, even if the title suggests it and it inspired the Japanese dub band of the same name. Only two dub versions of songs from the album appear as bonuses on the tracklisting, with most of the tracks giving us a heavy, crafted reggae on which Dennis Bovell's voice sometimes sits. The album thus has songs and instrumentals in equal proportion. For the former, "Audio Active" opens with Dub master, a good rub-a-dub toasted by Dennis Bovell himself, then with Little girl, which keeps the same festive atmosphere. Other tracks logically flirt with "lovers rock" such as Your love or the aptly named and famous Lovers rock. Finally, among the essentials, let us mention Pow wow, on the version of Whap'n Bap'n that Dennis Bovell had produced for the great I-Roy in 1980.

On the instrumental side, one remains a little sceptical about Roots symphony and its somewhat clumsy piano inspired by Bob Andy's My time. We prefer the title track Audio active boosted by trombone, or Zombie zonez, a darker track with a solo melodica. You can, on the other hand, skip Dream without a qualm, a horrible digital pop soup typical of the 80s. A few good tracks, then, for an album to be reserved above all for fans of British reggae.
