So it took almost a year after the last opus devoted to the Viceroys, released in April 2006, before we saw a new release from Makasound on its Inna De Yard label. After the roots veterans (Cedric Myton, Linval Thompson, Kiddus I) the series opens up to the mysterious Ras Michael Junior, son of the famous percussionist. We had already had a foretaste of this "Ras Michael Inna de Yard" on the first opus of the series, "Chinna & Friends", with Medicine Man, a track found here again that gives the album its name.

Under Ras Michael Junior's aegis, the series makes a turn from acoustic reggae, as on the previous opuses, towards a Jamaican folk. After an intro by Ronnie Davis (member of the Tennors and the Itals) that plunges us straight into the atmosphere, Ras Michael Junior launches into White Line, a track emblematic of this new direction. Accompanied by the guitar of Earl Chinna Smith, pillar and host of the series, Junior takes on bluesy tones, establishing himself as a sort of Jamaican Bob Dylan. An approach already found to a lesser extent on the opus devoted to Kiddus I, one of the most successful.

Here, no drums, but bewitching percussion (how could one be surprised, knowing his illustrious father?) supporting bluesy melodies driven by Earl Chinna Smith and his guitar (Collie Now, Medicine Man). Ras Michael Junior's singing moves between lament and power, his fine deep voice completing a picture of avowed minimalism that fits perfectly into this folk-blues approach, well beyond the borders of reggae.

Collie now, Hopes and dreams, medicine man biensur, make more money et old man, de loin mes préférées :)
