It was at the end of 2006 that "Around Tu Shung Peng", the first self-produced album by the Parisians Tu shung Peng, came out of the pot. Without adequate distribution, the project had remained confidential, until Makasound, which will release the band's second album in the autumn, reissued this first opus as a preamble. Like any self-respecting backing band, Tu Shung Peng submitted its original riddims, cooked up from the good old, sometimes tried-and-tested recipes of the 70s, to the inspiration of singers. The choice of guests (all Jamaicans except Difanga) thus follows a roots line with Ken Boothe and Justin Hinds, the old-timer deejay Lone Ranger, Ras Daniel Ray and Ganja Tree.
Behind them, the bass-drums duo offers solid roots turnarounds, crossed by brass riffs that are most often well found. The instrumental Funky Maziere, which moves between jazz and reggae, is a real joy and shows the band's swing. While Justin Hinds and Ken Boothe, true to their standing, make a notable appearance, that is not where the best of the album lies. We would rather pick the track by Al Pancho, who takes the prize with No Power To The Wicked Man, where his voice fits wonderfully with the dizzying heaviness of the riddim. Special mention also for the performance of Ganga Tree, a group of Jamaicans based in Paris, who deliver three tracks here brimming with rasta fervour.
The reservation, inherent in the exercise, is that by making reggae "the Jamaican way", you are measured against the heavyweights. On the whole, "Around Tu Shung Peng" is perhaps too linear, but which European backing band escapes the rule? It will be interesting to follow the band's career now that they are part of a stable. We are already dreaming of new productions with the Makasound artists. When will we get a featuring from Electric Dread? |
Bless UP
