In rock, there is no shortage of radio live sessions, hybrids of live performance and studio sound. But in reggae, with the notable exception of Bob Marley's appearance on KSAN Radio in 1973 in San Francisco, examples are rarer. Here is one: in 1982, Black Roots went to the BBC, into the hands of the producer John Peel, in two separate sessions recorded for the very famous BBC Sessions. The result, broadcast the same year, was gathered on an album, "In Session", in 1986, now unearthed by Makasound. In 2004, the French label had already reminded us of the English band's feats by reissuing their first two albums "Black Roots" and "On The Frontline" under a single banner.
"In Session" revisits most of their tracks, but the live performance draws an even deeper mysticism from them, as on The Father, Africa or Tribal War. The heavy rhythms underpin guitar and keyboard solos, the hard core of a melodic roots shaped in Bristol but turned towards Jamaica and its vocal trios. Juvenile Deliquent, Survival, Move On (with Rico Rodriguez on trombone), What dem a do... the successes are many. Makasound adds to the 10 original tracks some "exclusive bonuses" in which the band's first maxis sit alongside 12" versions of tracks already heard live, so that for some of them we discover a third version. A thoroughness that feeds the impression a little further of an "On The Frontline, volume 2": a complement for some, a fresh introduction to Black Roots' melodic roots for others.
