Greensleeves is celebrating its 30th birthday! Thirty years of success in reggae: it must be said that a label whose first release was Dr Alimentado's album "Best Dressed Chicken in Town" could hardly end badly. The little shop in West Ealing, London, has become one of the most important houses in reggae, and gathers its hits on a double CD.
We go back chronologically through three decades of reggae, dancehall, digital, ragga and bogle, via tracks that have admittedly been compiled many times, but are as good to listen to as ever. From Bam Bam to the Playground riddim, from Barrington Levy to Vybz Kartel, by way of Wayne Smith, Buju Banton, Garnett Silk or Sizzla, all the greats find a place here, except Capleton. The tracklist speaks for itself.
A hits-led logic that makes sense on this anniversary compilation. We simply hope that in the years ahead Greensleeves will dig a little deeper into its back catalogues. |
