Rather discreet of late (no release in 2007), Luciano remains an essential artist. Proof of this is "Jah is my navigator", released on VP, which once again reunites the Luciano / Dean Fraser duo, as on the previous 'Child of a king' in 2006 and 2004's "Serious time". Unlike its predecessor, which contained a good number of singles, "Jah is my navigator" is completely new. The Messenger's voice is intact and still serves timeless, universal themes (special mention to the sublime No evil and Jah canopy). But the production work of the brilliant saxophonist Dean Fraser is just as essential; the riddims, whether classic or original, are all impeccable and best serve the singer's vocal prowess. Tarrus Riley and Duane Stephenson, two other Fraser protégés, also lent a hand in making this album, writing the lyrics of Jah is my navigator and Darkness respectively.
"Jah is my navigator" draws on some of the great riddims in reggae history, such as the Hot milk (Wise up youth), Beres Hammond's Groovy little thing (Wish you were mine), and Prince Alla's Stone (Trod out). Even the Full up, in its Political fiction version, which had already served as a setting for Tarrus Riley's superb Beware, features here on the surefire hit Sweet Jamaica, at the end of which Luciano indulges in one of his astonishing deejay turns. The tribute to his musical origins is complete with a modern, horn-driven cover of Peter Tosh (I'm the tuffest, in a duet with his son Andrew), and above all a Bob Marley cover executed with panache, Jah live, whose riddim had already been used for Duane Stephenson's hit August Town. In these times dominated by dancehall and gangster attitude, 'Jah Is My Navigator' is like a great ray of sunshine for fans of roots and meditative reggae, and marks Luciano's strong comeback. But is it really a surprise? |
