The enthusiasm surrounding the music of St Croix has borne fruit: island productions now enjoy international reach. In France, Soul Village is responsible for bringing back the best of I Grade. The Americans of Lustre Kings had a good nose in teaming up with St Croix's emblematic band. After I Grade, Lustre Kings: Midnite strings albums together like pearls, this time under the aegis of producer Andrew "Moon" Baine, aka Digital Ancient. Available since last September, "Infinite Quality" arrives here for the new year.

Fans and detractors of Midnite will not change their minds about Benjamin Vaughn's singing: there is the same verbal logorrhoea, the same volubility in the vocals that contributes to the group's natural mystique. But it is the sonic density that strikes, built up with violins, flutes and brass joining keyboards and acoustic guitars. In this respect, Right Here is not only the best track on the album: it also demonstrates the quality of Digital Ancient's work, which underpins the richness of the album.

Like their earlier albums, "Infinite Quality" favours acoustic one drop compositions (The Grounds, Frequency) but does not balk at abandoning the drums in favour of programming (as on the oriental-flavoured Mic Row Assemble or the very R'n'B Attacking Bones), or even at lingering over long laments carried by a single acoustic guitar (Forgiven or Dew). A welcome alternative to Vaughn's litany, Lutan Fyah joins him (as Lustre Kings requires) on Stay with his majesty. Fans will be delighted. As for the others, it is time to take a look at one of the most inventive bands of the moment.
