REVIEW
Review written by Alexandre Tonus on Friday, October 10th 2008 - 19 770 views
Still little known in France, Alpha Wess is nonetheless a true star in his country, Guinea. Founder of the Mourag (Mouvement Rasta de Guinée), this 36-year-old singer has never hesitated to denounce the failings of his native country, nor to take direct aim at Lansana Conté, president for 24 years, decrying his authoritarian practices and his crooked dealings. So much so that, censored, threatened and even the target of an assassination attempt in 2004, he was forced to leave Guinea for safety reasons and has since had political refugee status in France. Censored in 2004 by the Guinean Copyright Office, his third album "Koutou Koutou" has been reissued by Makasound and renamed "Le Choc Des Cultures" for the French market.
In the purest tradition of African reggae, Alpha Wess, who produced his own album, has managed to incorporate traditional instruments such as the kora and the Fulani flute, giving his music an undeniable density. Although he studied sociology, his lyrics, sung in French but also in Malinke and Pular, may seem a little childlike, but only the better to get his message across to the Guinean people, 65% of whom are illiterate. Alpha Wess passionately defends his idea that Africa must take matters into its own hands to get out of trouble and not wait for help from the French, European or other governments (Prise de conscience, L'unité nationale). A "philosophy" that has caused him plenty of problems in the past, but has also made him the true spokesman of the common people of Guinea.
Listening inevitably brings Tiken Jah Fakoly to mind, so similar are the voice and the style of singing in French, and the songs in dialect are preferable, as they better show the full measure of Alpha Wess's talent and originality. A mirror of a Guinean society trampled underfoot, "Le Choc Des Cultures" alerts the world to a country whose situation does not receive the same media coverage as its Senegalese or Ivorian counterparts. |

C'est vrais qu'on pense tout de suite à TJF mais se qui fait le charme ce disque c'est que 7 titre sur 12 son dans le dialecte guinéen se qui colore particulièrement l'album !
