Everyone who knows Black Uhuru also knows Don Carlos, one way or another... Indeed, this singer with the soft, warm voice served the legendary group founded by Mykal Rose on two occasions: first on the album Love crisis, in 77, then again in 87, to succeed Junior Reid, who was failing to fill the void left by the departure of Mykal " leader " Rose.
This Lazer Beam, released on Culture press, is therefore a compilation meant to shed light on the stretch of road already travelled by this unjustly neglected singer (another one...). And the archival work done by the label proves very dense and meticulous; of the 23 tracks available, the first half is devoted to Don Carlos's songs with Sly and Robbie (including the highly renowned Jonnie big mouth and the magnificent title track, Lazer Beam, with its little laser-ray noises), the second to the work done with the legendary Roots Radics.
In short, this compilation is a gold mine! The tracks flow together without a hitch, the melodies are gripping and bewitching, sometimes nostalgic; this is great, beautiful reggae. Skilfully combining lover tracks (such as My baby just love I man, Just groove with me, Come in girl or the devastating Oh girl) with more strictly roots tracks (such as Ababa John 1, Praise Jah with love and affection, Natty dread have him credential and the surprising reggae cover of By the rivers of Babylon (simply retitled Rivers of Babylon)), Don Carlos comes across as a versatile artist; he transports us, plunging us by turns into the steaminess of Jamaican dancehalls (My brethren party), then into sad, cold everyday reality (Hog and goat).
This record is a very good product, rich in good reggae tunes as well as lovely lover ballads; whatever the case, Mister Carlos's voice is unique (nothing like Mykal Rose, nor even Junior Reid, whom he does resemble a little more) and sits with virtuosity on whatever instrumental he is offered (just listen to the last track, Mr. Sun; it is mystifying!). Let us only hope that this compilation will help pierce the fog surrounding Don Carlos's artistic personality, because he amply deserves it. Good vibes! |
