REVIEW

For some bands, the album can prove a perilous exercise. Especially when, like Stand High Patrol, that band has built its sets on permanent renewal (they are capable of playing sets without their hits). On their first album, "Midnight Walkers", ten years after the genesis, the patrol from the West advocates an eclecticism that matches their stage outings. Just like what the trio offers live, "Midnight Walkers" looks wide: a combination of dub, digital reggae, hip-hop and electro.
In a word, the Dub-A-Dub recipe, concocted by varying the dosage of each ingredient. Over this patchwork of productions, Pupa Jim multiplies flows, wordplay and allusions to Brittany, and retraces the history of the patrol. Whether it is a "balanced" synthesis or hip-hop and electro turns, the different worlds follow one another without the patrol ever departing from its principles, or from its minimalist productions whose stripped-down design spells efficiency.
With a darker tone: even the lively The Bar (perhaps the only track you could call digital reggae) is not as cheerful as it seems. Brest Bay, already unveiled as a preview, had introduced this twilight atmosphere that runs through the album. "The rich cross borders, but not the poor," says Pupa Jim on Boat People, heard in a lesser version on Mungo's Hi Fi's album "Forward Ever".
Midnight Walkers opens the first breach: a short, martial and tellurian instrumental, which paves the way for the ample and powerful Entertainer, before sliding onto hip-hop ground: Muskateer Sword and above all Home made, which plunges us into the West Coast of the 90's. The last turn is electro, and Dub it, already heard live in a different mix, is only the beginning of the curve. Holiday Today then Automatic Attack wrap up the album in clubbing mode, whose success on the dancefloor is not hard to imagine. Dark, eclectic and full of surprises, "Midnight Walkers" is built like a good set: a rising intensity before letting the horses loose.
