Going back does not mean being backward. With "Return of the Raggamuffin", Skarra Mucci, a Jamaican artist based in Germany, takes us on a journey to the golden age of dancehall, while remaining current, fresh and modern.
It has been a while since we first heard this voice in the dancehalls, a raspy, nasal voice, easily recognisable. After "Rise & Shine" in 2007, "912 aka Hot Like Fire" in 2009 and a hip-hop crossover album "Skarrashizzo" the same year, Skarra Mucci's new album rides the wave of the return to favour of old-school vibes. Most of the tracks are backed by crucial riddims or refixes of riddims that have proved their worth.
His musical approach could be compared to that of veteran DJs Charlie Chaplin, Josey Wales or Burro Banton. Feel Allright is a brilliant version of Murderer on the Three Blind Mice riddim. And in the manner of the old-timers, on Movie Star, he lays his lyrics over Delroy Wilson's classic original. Another nod to the raggamuffin heritage, the intro borrowed from the very famous Raggamuffin by Gregory Isaacs & Dennis Brown on a track titled Raggamuffin. Note also the very inspired Jah Blessing, on an equally inspired riddim: the Jaguar riddim.
The key producers of "Return of the Raggamuffin" are the Swiss of Weedy G Soundforce productions. The three members of this crew are best known for the riddims they have been releasing in series for some years (Hyper Slam, Bubbler, Power Infection, a refix of the Sleng Teng…). It is a pity, however, that the album did not include the track My Sound, on the Laughter After Tears riddim, yet produced by Weedy G, and one of Skarra Mucci's best tracks. |
