The Rockers Disciples & Daba Makourejah

Far Eye

Four years after the release of the promising ''Crossroads'' (with singer Chola), the French band Rockers Disciples sign a new opus, "Far Eye", released on RockDis Music, their own label.
Illustrated by Jata, the sleeve of "Far Eye" is in itself the promise of a journey into a colourful and mysterious world. A promise kept by the Rouen outfit, who, from the first notes of Calabash Rock, an instrumental intro giving pride of place to the brass, take their listener on a stroll through a deep and driving dub.
Rockers Disciples, who had collaborated - under the name RockDis - with the Blackboard Jungle sound system on the project ''Musical Raid'' in June 2011 (review of 23/09/2011), stand out on every track through the quality of their arrangements, the melodious soul voice of Senegalese singer Daba Makourejah creating a limpid alchemy with their singular "dub-roots".
Already present on "Musical Raid" (she wrote the album's title track), Daba Makourejah denounces here and there the abuses of the system (Mr Officer, The System Is A Fraud), delivering above all a message of hope and tolerance, found notably on the superb Dina Diex, sung in Wolof, the Senegalese language that carries her roots, or on Right Time, wonderfully shared with singer Mo' Kalamity, also present on "Musical Raid" (Conquering Lion).
On the floating Afriké, Daba Makourejah switches back to English to pay tribute to the continent of her glorious ancestors, thus closing the sung part of "Far Eye" (8 tracks out of 14). Five dub versions made by Rootical45 (Blackboard Jungle studio) punctuate the CD version of "Far Eye", which is also available as a 12" (6 tracks) on Blackboard Jungle.
If Rockers Disciples and Daba Makourejah point a finger at the Illusions of the modern world, the harmonious sincerity of the journey offered by "Far Eye" is no illusion.
