REVIEW

Almost a year ago, the death of Matthew McAnuff at the age of 25 sent shockwaves through the reggae community. Murdered at the dawn of his life, young Matthew McAnuff, one of Winston McAnuff's sons, had had only a brief career but had already had time to make his mark with his terrific hit Be Careful, discovered on the compilation "Inna De Yard" with Earl Chinna Smith in 2006. Besides a handful of singles released here and there, Matthew was working on his first album. Makasound's woes pushed back its release… until his tragic disappearance at the end of summer 2012. His first album, on which he had been working since 2009, will therefore be his testament.
Recorded at the famous Harry J Studio in Kingston, under the guidance of his father Winston McAnuff, the album brings together a superb college of musicians: Flabba Holt, Style Scott and Dwight Pickney (three of the Roots Radics), but also Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, the percussionist Sticky Thompson, a horn section made up of Guillaume "Stepper" Briard, Eric "Rico" Gaultier and Olivier Caron… and even Cedric Myton on backing vocals! François Xavier Bossard, aka Fixi, who supervised the album with Winston McAnuff (and who will release a joint album in September, "A New Day"), also contributes a few accordion notes. As you will have gathered, the album bears the mark of McAnuff senior. But far from his pop / reggae sonic collages, "Be Careful" blows a burning roots.
Over 13 tracks, the album demonstrates the extent of Matthew McAnuff's talents. The powerful Midnight Rolling bears witness: he cannot be limited to a single track (however good), as one reads too often. The choice of covers, well judged and well chosen, is not insignificant: the brooding Book of Life by Hugh Mundell (produced by Augustus Pablo) and A little way different by Errol Dunkley show the lineage in which he stands. The album unfolds a mysticism rarely perceived in young artists, and Matthew McAnuff's singing breathes a deep spirituality into Trod On, No Run, African Chanting and Move out of Babylon. The only crossover incursion in this roots testament is the catchy Brainwash, with the Parisian producer Tom Fire, who also mixed the album. How else to conclude than with the unmissable Be Careful? A track we listen to today as a macabre premonition revealed, at the time, only the radiant future opening up for Matthew McAnuff. "Be Careful" carries within it this feeling of something unfinished and the immense regret at the loss of a young artist bursting with talent. |
