Three years after "Midnight Walkers", the Breton patrol is back in the racks with its new album "A Matter of Scale". So this is what the three musketeers have been cooking up all this time. The Bretons play the card of parsimony and few singles slipped out in the interval. In the meantime, they built their sound system and clocked up kilometres with endless concerts, armed with their "dubadub". The house style mixes genres aplenty, but listening to "A Matter Of Scale" widens the frontiers and musical field of Stand High Patrol.
The vaporous Sleep On It, the first single, left serious clues about this turning point, which disdains heavy bass to dwell on nonchalant tempos. "The darkest hour is just before dawn / Sleep on it / Tomorrow you'll have another chance". All composed by PuppaJim, the tracks owe a great deal to the personality of their singer, whose vocal palette is enriched with new tones. Tempest ("a storm in a teacup"), with its jazzy drums, and Geography give him particular room, filled by the magnificent trumpet solos of Meriadeg Guillanton.
In search of new openings, Stand High Patrol does not turn its back on its fundamentals, starting with roots on the rugged No Matter How Long It Takes, Gambling Johnny with its elastic bass ("Do you really want to gamble your life on a coin toss? It's a dangerous vice"), or Routine ("I feel like a machine"). Overloaded Truck presents a lighter theme, recounting the adventures of touring, filling and emptying their "overloaded truck".
Never absent from Stand High Patrol's cocktail, hip hop is represented here by the brief Blue Wax and the flamboyant Ruckus.Last but not least, the UK dub school occupies the final stretch of the album, fittingly recorded across the Channel, in Leicester. The haunting Warehouse, Style And City, which takes stock of musical genres and the cities that gave birth to them, and above all The Tunnel: a formidable closing instrumental with its tectonic bass, show all the talent of Stand High Patrol. Superbly illustrated by Kazy Uscelf, juggling tempos and moods, "A Matter Of Scale" is a singular object, and proves that Stand High Patrol is still on the move.
