REVIEW
Review written by Alexandre Tonus on n-d - 14 069 views
Here is a truly essential CD for all fans of the sudden and impressive bobo dread movement that has been raging of late. Determine, alias 'Rohan Alexander Bennett', is not new (he had already made his mark on the track Kette drum alongside Beenie Man and later on Sizzla's Black woman and child, on the track Mi lord), but he is now going to compete seriously with the three tenors that are Capleton, Anthony B. and Sizzla (although Junior Reid is considered one of the movement's pioneers, he has been seriously losing steam lately...), thanks to the release of this gorgeous album.
At first sight, one might regret the absence from this CD of the singles that made this sing-jay's name at home in Jamaica (remember Mans heart or Frustration...), but the gap is perfectly made up for and the result is flawless. Two big Determine singles are present all the same (Time like this and Hollow gyow), but the most interesting part is undoubtedly the rest. Many songs reuse the instrumentals of tracks produced by the leading trio of the bobos; Live wire (on the heathen riddim), Man a African (on the same riddim as Sizzla's Woman of Africa), Satta massagana (on the riddim of the same name) and Unseen eyes and They have no love on Startrail riddims already used by Anthony B. and Sizzla on 2 Strong).
However, the bobo does not stop there and multiplies an even more original style on instrumentals of his own; you are left open-mouthed by the sublime Zion hill and the title track Freedom chant, which moves away from the more hardcore singles the sing-jay has put out recently to make room for real, good roots dancehall. Revisiting reggae classics (Searching on the legendary rockfort rock riddim), even going as far as genuine verbal as well as musical ravings (what a curiosity the track Rumba is!), Determine has the versatile talent that makes bobo dreads so interesting, able to swing between strictly roots and culture sounds, like Nuh member love (which is not unlike " Inna jungle, terrible jungle, lion is dead tonight... ") and super-powerful boggle instrumentals (listen to Nah go manage di damage and get slapped in the face!).
In short, this opus from the fourth musketeer of the bobo stable is a real little gem; the voice and flow are not unlike Anthony B., but with a touch more firmness and mysticism, which make Determine a 100% original artist and highly recommended to all fans of current conscious dancehall (especially those with a soft spot for Sizzla, Anthony B. or Capleton!). Buy it without hesitation, you cannot be without a piece like this in your record collection! When will we get an album from Jah Mason, so that the bobo clan can widen a little more??? |
