REVIEW
Review written by Benoit Georges on Tuesday, February 03rd 2004 - 10 203 views
The year 2004 begins rather well for French production with the release of Jungle urbaine, a compilation from the Section urbaine studios. The principle: six in-house riddims for some twenty French singers (even if some tracks are in English). The riddims are dancehall roots in type and very well made. The artists seem to have voted for the Plasma riddim, which is also my own favourite riddim. The excellent compositional work on the riddims and the production of the vocal takes must be stressed: the final result is first-rate.
Among the names already known, there is Brahim, who delivers a very fine track with "Illusions", then Manu of Baobab, who combines with Habib of Kaliman for a rather successful satirical track, "Pas de travail".
Among the best-known local artists, we find Little Francky, with a fine song, a little simple but easy to listen to; Jenfy, who lays down a well-crafted style (which reminded me of Tanya Stephens) on the classic theme of political corruption and inequality; Djungle, with an original style but lyrics that are hard to understand on first listen; and Firestorm, who sings exclusively in English on two tracks, unconvincing and also hard to understand, I find.
Then come artists closer to the Section urbaine crew and little known to the general public. No great revelations among these artists and rather uneven tracks, even if some fare better than others, such as Mighty Killa, with a track with funny rhymes, the sista Miel, who does rather well, and
Jahoviah & Daddy Kali, who close the compilation with a track in Creole that works well. There is in fact something for almost every taste, in terms of both style and lyrics.
Jungle urbaine is therefore an interesting initiative that deserves a big up. The work on the riddims and the production are of a very high standard and show that independent French productions can be very competitive. Thanks to these good riddims, the compilation is easy to listen to. As for the artists, you can feel that many laid down their vocals on the vibe, so it is up to each listener to listen and judge. Personally I don't connect with all the tracks: either because the tracks are in English (sung with a French accent), for example, or because of styles that are not original enough (Brian on "Le soleil"), or quite simply for lack of presence on the mic. One can also criticise a few rather easy rhymes from some artists, and themes treated in too classic and conventional a manner (as with the lyrics about the FN, which are, to my mind, far too basic).
In conclusion, plenty of vibes then for a diverse album. Worth a listen! |
