REVIEW

St Croix? This little island in the US Virgin Islands archipelago is starting to get noticed. Some see it as the cradle of a revival of roots that would have left Jamaica… The island label I Grade Records stands out with finely chiselled productions and superb arrangements. Something Yahadanai's first album, "One Atonement", does not lack.
Unlike the other members of the I Grade Records stable, Yahadanai (pronounced Yah Da Nai, according to the press release) is a young singjay from Guyana living in Harlem (NYC). After a collaboration with Abja (another I Grade Records reservist) on the album "Inna Red I Hour", Yahadanai reveals himself on a very promising first album. His meditative style is a blend of deejaying and singing that sits comfortably with Laurent "Tippy" Alfred's solid productions. The touch of the label's co-founder, also a producer and arranger, is audible from the very first chords. The arrangements, the label's trademark, are well and truly there. And what arrangements! The superb opening Rise, with its delicate guitar chords, is sure to have a fine career.
"One Atonement" collects compositions with thoughtful lyrics, though their length sometimes makes them lose some of their impact, as with Mama Love or Light, on which Yahadanai's contemplative style can tire. But the overall quality of "One Atonement" is striking, and confirmed by tracks such as the serious title track One Atonement, the acoustic and grave Babylon Toy, Warfare with its staccato breathing, or Roman Soldiers with its brass lament. Wadada and Gratitude dig deeper into the yardie roots groove. Against this background, the curious Best Things (with Pressure of Star Lion Family) stands out with its r'n'b accents. The dub of Rise, which closes the album, lets us appreciate all of Tippy's orchestration work. Yahadanai has made the most of the work of I Grade Records, which is establishing itself as the custodian of a modern, renewed roots. A successful and extremely promising first album.
NB: This album is not distributed in France. You can get hold of it via the website.
