REVIEW
Review written by Sebastien Jobart on Thursday, October 21st 2004 - 9 728 views
The very active French team at Zenah Music dig a little deeper into the roots groove with a double album, “Zenah Music Meets Black Roots Production“, which brings together productions from Sugar Minott's label and those from the Montreuil-based label.
Building on their collaboration on the album “Leave Out Babylon“, Sugar Minott and Zenah Music team up again for this double album with its explicit title. Two discs for two labels. One, Black Roots, Jamaican, was created by Sugar Minott in 1979. The other, Zenah Music, is French and has existed since 2003. In between, the Youth Promotion collective, a gathering of Black Roots artists with famous members (from Garnett Silk to Tristan Palmer, from Tony Tuff to Yami Bolo). On the first CD, illustrious names take their places, in front of the microphones as behind the instruments: Sly Dunbar, Leroy Horsemouth Wallace, Robbie Shakespeare, Earl Chinna Smith, Tony Chin, Jackie Mittoo, Gladstone Anderson, Dean Fraser, Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, Baba Brooks, Count Ossie, Bongo Herman, Skully Simms… The list is long; it hurts the eyes but does the ears good.
Sugar Minott is the producer of these 10 polished roots tracks picked from his immense catalogue. You shiver listening to What goes up with Dennis Walks's gripping voice and its little guitar notes. You dive unreservedly into the vocal harmonies of the trio The Gaylads (Joy in the morning) and the African Brothers (All who gone). Franky Paul shines on British Argentine, and it is a pleasure to find Don Angelo on What a situation.
Motley cocktail
The second CD offers a motley cocktail of established artists and young hopefuls, members of Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion. Called up by Zenah Music, they all explore the No War Riddim instrumental concocted by the French label, which serves as the basis for this work. A one riddim album of 17 anti-war tracks with varied interpretations. Ranking Joe (Away with your fuss & fighting), Excellent Kid (Na Give Up), Calaloo Man (Rasta Lion) and Determine (the very good War Munga) provide a welcome alternative to a generally meditative tone. Sugar Minott calls out the US president on Easy Mr Bush, while Luciano sings as only he can, without pushing too hard (All Over The World), as does Tony Tuff (Give It to me).
The listen, inevitably less fluid than on the first CD, remains pleasant. Having produced Sugar Minott's album “Leave Out Babylon“ and while we await the African Brothers reunion album, Zenah Music forges a new France-Jamaica connection. |
A conscious work... LArge up
