A new Jah Cure album? Not at all. The tracklisting is worrying, and listening confirms it: the 16 tracks that make up this opus have almost all been available for months or even years.
No new material, no surprises, no (or hardly any) current singles... While Jah Cure, still in prison, has never been so active, putting out quality singles one after another, this "Freedom Blues" offers none of them. It is simple: 10 of the 16 tracks are taken straight from the album "Free Jah Cure" (an album that dates from 2000 all the same, and which Jet Star, with its sense of opportunity, is reissuing at half price this month).
On the new-material side, we barely find the familiar Good Morning Jah Jah on the powerful I Swear riddim released late last year. But no Longing For, no Congo Man, still less most high cup full, all those high-flying singles. Instead we find the very good but thoroughly well-known Sunny Day, Songs Of Freedom, Chant... Jah Cure's poignant, anguished voice soars over bewitching compositions that have become classics of the singer's repertoire.
Besides the ten tracks from "Free Jah Cure", we also find the inevitable King In The Jungle, a duet with Sizzla (taken from the second album, Ghetto Life), Troddin the valley, an old single with a good groove that has proven its worth, and Love is the solution (which appeared on the compilation "Morgan Heritage & friends vol. 1", in 1998). What remains is a good compilation for those who do not yet know Jah Cure. Everyone else, move along. |

Salut
