Prolific in 2004, Luciano keeps up a frenzied pace in his album releases. The first album of 2005, 'Hail the comforter' will certainly not be the only one this year. The tracks here come from sessions for the Crystal Ball / Fire Ball label, known to 45rpm enthusiasts for its very fine roots dancehall. Tracks already well road-tested in sound systems and at Luciano's concerts, which we are glad to hear again.
The Crystal Ball label producer Chris Hunt, cousin of the legendary Clive Hunt, has built a good reputation in the Kingston dancehalls with series taking classic riddims, given a dancehall boost and backed by renowned musicians such as the Firehouse crew and Dean Fraser. Made up mainly of Luciano tracks from series of the last two years, this album is an opportunity to (re)discover the Messenger's hits for the label.
Alongside the title track, the very good Hail the comforter on the Hand cart boy riddim, we find classic instrumentals backing very effective tracks: among others, Burn on the Death in the arena riddim, Keep the music alive on the famous African Beat, Father God on the How can I leave, presented here in a different mix from the 45, which was titled Save us now, Give me the power on the Love is overdue, Stop the war on the Soon forward and Herb minister on the Telephone Love. Riddim lovers will therefore feel right at home. As for Luciano, he again offers proof of his consistency, with impeccable vocal quality. Also worth noting is the track Crafty, split into two versions, with a well-executed Anthony B feature. More than the artist Luciano, this dancehall-flavoured album showcases the work of the Crystal Ball (or Fire Ball) label, which has chosen to bet for several years on roots dancehall, much like Fifth Element. An approach that suits an artist like Luciano perfectly and which now finds an international echo thanks to this album released by Jet Star.
A very dynamic selection, admittedly not exactly fresh, but one that will delight most of his listeners. |
