REVIEW
Review written by Sébastien Jobart on Monday, July 19th 2004 - 16 193 views
A figure of roots reggae since the 90s and an influential artist in Jamaica, Luciano feeds his reputation with high-quality albums. The militant “Serious Times”, produced by Dean Fraser and featuring some of the Messenjah's most successful tracks, is no exception.
Luciano occupies a place apart in the Jamaican musical landscape. His enormous renown in his country is matched only by his aura, a blend of sacred mysticism and wisdom. After his career began under the guidance of the producer Philipp “Fattis” Burrell, he withdrew from the circuit and took two years to meditate on his life and career, before composing the album “Where There Is Life” in 1995. Having become the Messenjah, Luciano develops universal themes, his warm, soul-tinged voice making full use of contemplative melodies. After numerous albums, his famous verve unfolds here over solidly acoustic compositions, backed by Dean Fraser's flawless production. The work of this renowned saxophonist, already present on the albums “One Way Ticket” (1995) and “A New Day” (2001), is immediately audible on the energetic opener Give Praise. This hymn to the glory of Haile Selassie is lifted by multiple arrangements. Brass, guitars, percussion, keyboards: the whole album is remarkably dressed in this way. No surprise when the musicians are called Sly Dunbar, Danny Bassie, Robbie Lynn, Nambo Robinson… and of course Dean Fraser. Three of the 17 tracks are produced by Bobby Digital (No Where To Go, the cover Echoes of My Mind and the spiritual Alpha & Omega), while King Jammy handles the production of the more modern Only Love, on which the album ends.
A major work
So many names to ensure riddims that are as much one drop as more contemporary. Such as the riddim by the Germans of Seeed, Doctor's Darling, which recently benefited Tanya Stephens (Its A Pity). Already out as a single, Stay Away is one of the album's most successful tracks: Luciano's voice soars, superb, begging children to keep clear of violence and trouble. The gentle Echoes of My Mind and We need a miracle are also an opportunity to appreciate the whole vocal palette of this artist. The themes remain in the direct line of Luciano's songwriting. The tone turns serious on Serious Times, Serious Measures and The World Is Troubled, a successful cover of Dennis Brown, while Love Will Make It and Only Love reaffirm Luciano's faith in Love. The album proves very balanced, alternating hits and good tracks, without a single one being truly a miss. It will be hard not to regard this “Serious Times” as a major work in his discography. A solid and joyful album, which will both please fans of the Messenjah and win over the most sceptical. |
