For anyone who loves the sounds of St Croix, the I Grade Records label often appears as a supplier of quality tracks. Tippy's very active label is releasing a host of albums by artists who are only waiting to break through internationally. Ancient King is one of them. His particular style sets him apart from his compatriots, with a powerful, raspy voice that breathes great energy into tracks that are always perfectly orchestrated. The proof is the opening Conquering Sound, in combination with Prince Pankhi, which convinces straight away. "It's the conquering sound," sings Ancient King. "This voice must be heard, these are positive words. It's a sound that makes you happy when you feel bad." Before concluding with a definitive "This is Ancient King, with the ancient sound".

While his spirited singing adapts as well to modern island reggae as to the minimalist, jerky dancehall of Battlefield Marshall, the powerful deejay suffers from a voice that is sometimes too forced and that loses its melody on certain tracks (Do Good, Nah Bow or Access Psychologically). This is all the more of a shame as he can be more nuanced on St Croix Run Red, on the same riddim as Yahadanai's Best Thing with Pressure, or even whimsical on Get The Best, with its suitably nervous guitar, where Ancient King demands the best marijuana, the "I Grade", in a nod to the label. From dancehall ( ) to hip hop sounds (Here It Comes) by way of more traditional roots (Children of the world), this first album covers a wide range of musical styles. A variety that gives "Conquering Sound" the flavour of a stylistic exercise, and a successful one. A new St Croix artist to watch.
