Unreleased tracks, extended versions, different mixes…: B sides, those studio recording offcuts set aside before an album's release, are feverishly sought after by collectors. Especially when they concern the Heptones, the emblematic Jamaican vocal trio, and their album that became a classic, "Night Food". The Auralux label thus brings out of the cupboard a few unreleased Heptones versions, compiling on this album tracks recorded at Harry J's studio and at Lee Perry's Black Ark.
What can one say of the dazzling versions of Garden of Life or Warden? These gems of production, carried by Leeroy Sibbles's superb voice, are unquestionably the centrepieces of the album. As a result, the tracks recorded with Lee Perry (with whom they made their biggest hits) are perhaps the least punchy, relegated to the end of the album. These B sides, gathered under a superb and original sleeve, probably lack substance: only five tracks followed by their dubs, and four extended versions. Buying this album will therefore not be essential for everyone. But it contains a few sonic pearls that every Heptones fan should own.
