This Studio One Women is the 17th release in the series put out by the English label Soul Jazz Records. Always of high quality, these reissues from Coxsone's lair very quickly attain the status of historic pieces, of testimonies. There is no chronological logic to these 16 tracks recorded between 1966 and 1981.

The selection is sharp as always and it is a pleasure to find forgotten artists again, from Denise Darlington to Jerry Jones by way of the Tonettes or Angela Prince and, of course, the late Jennifer Lara. The latter is by far the most represented, with four tracks. The compilation is also dedicated to her and a short interview can be read in the booklet. An artist mainly known for her work at Studio One, here we find her hit Consider Me, a hilarious My Man(is a problem), Tell Me Where but also a lesser-known I am in love from 1981 that borrows a well-known old school hip hop theme.

Reggae Queens
Those who would become the I-Three's are represented, with the exception of Judy Mowatt (who nevertheless recorded for Coxsone, notably within the Gaylettes). On these two recordings, A Deh Pon Dem (1971) and King Street (1980), Rita is alongside Hortense Ellis and Cecil Campbell. An occasion to realise that the Soulettes were still active when Rita was an I-Three. It is Tell Me Now that represents Marcia Griffiths here (a track on her 1978 album "Naturally"). The tracks selected from the Soul Jazz catalogue have sometimes already been used on other compilations, like the Tonettes' I'll Give it to You, already on Studio One Showcase, vol.1 and Studio One Classic Lovers. Reading the credits, some of them are surprising, like Angela Prince's No Bother no Fuss, written by a certain H.Hinds who would be none other than a 15-year-old Horace Andy (!). Various tendencies are represented by these ladies, from JB's-style funk (Jerry Jones's There's a chance for me) to soul (Claudette McLean's Give Love another try), to roots (Della Humphrey's version of Bunny Wailer's Dream Land) or rocksteady, notably with War No Right by Denise Arlington, helped by Leroy 'Heptone' Sibbles. While we knew the track A prayer for Jah well, it is Come to me that was chosen here to represent the mysterious Jay Tees.

Each track is a genuine piece of the history of Jamaican music. An excellent selection backed by a booklet that is admittedly a little hasty and which, besides a few words from Jennifer Lara, contains the words of Norma Dodd (Coxsone's wife) as well as those of Sister Ignatius, matriarch of the legendary Alpha Boys School. A compilation that gives us the opportunity to pay tribute to all these "Reggae Queens", starting with Jennifer Lara, who passed away in June 2005, and Hortense Ellis, who passed away in 2000.
