We took advantage of Warrior King and Morgan Heritage's visit to Nancy Jazz Pulsation to meet them. Normally scheduled for the end of the soundchecks (which Warrior King would not attend), our interview was finally pushed back until after his show. Once the concert was over, our reporter, impatient for this meeting, saw W.K. arrive calmly in the press room and pose for a few photos. Surprise: Warrior had not come alone but with Ruben I. After the latter said a prayer, we began the long-awaited interview...
Reggaefrance / Greetings to Haile Selassie the first! I was born in Kingston. Then I went to St Catherine, then Clarendon, and I came back to St Catherine. Warrior King / When and how did you start singing?
I've always sung but I realised I had talent around the age of 13, I started out by imitating Bounty Killa... At school, my classmates thought it was cool. It's from the age of 13 that I started making my own music. When did you record your first track?
I recorded a few songs but Virtuous Woman is the first track my producer decided to put on the radio. Can you tell us about the artists who influenced you?
Lots of artists in fact... Bounty Killa, Bob Marley, Garnett Silk, Admiral Tibet, Luciano, Beres Hammond... I learn from everybody and I create my own style. Rastafari! Which studio did you record in?
I recorded most of the tracks at Bobby Digital's, and one track at Penthouse. But they were all recorded in Jamaica! Tell us about your featurings...
It was the producer's idea and in the end, it produced some good combinations. Did you start out singing on sound systems?
You know, in Jamaica most artists start singing at school. I started like that, beating out the rhythm on the table and stringing together a few lyrics. Then I started singing on the sounds, and I carried on with bands. This year at Jamaican Sunrise, was it your first appearance in France?
Yes, it was the first time I'd come to Europe this summer. What do you think of the French audience?
Warrior King: wonderful! i love dem! "I love you all" france people! I come here as a militant, I bring good music for the French and for the massives all over the world. So I love france people, they're warm... hein ruben I
Ruben I: sure! Everywhere we've been in the world, it's the best vibes we've felt. I find you cultured. We love everybody so we love the French audience, and I want to learn to speak French. I went to a reggae hip-hop festival in Germany, it was great, everybody has goods vibes but the French are special. How is it going with Ras-ites?
It's the first time I played with them and it went very well. They have talent, they will go far. But the drummer who played tonight wasn't the original drummer, he's the one from the Abyssinians. The band's drummer is in London. How do you write your tunes?
All the inspiration that comes to me and the divine power Haile Sellasie I! Creator of the universe, he created everything, he created the stars, you and me... Most of my inspiration comes from my experience, the tribulation of people, naturally from the creator... What he does that is good and makes you feel. It's a divine thing. My music is divine! That's why it touches so many souls! “Divine music come's from divine souls! Haile Selassie the first!” If you listen to my music, you know who I am. Rastafari. After your success, one might have thought you would voice more 45s. What about that?
Right now we're promoting the album, we've been to the USA, Canada and Europe. At the moment, I don't have much time... but I've got quite a few offers!
There are other albums coming soon. Each album is like a chapter of the Bible, the first is like Genesis and the second Exodus. Reading the Bible takes time, you see! But the albums will come naturally... one after the other. Do you have a message for our readers?
(He starts singing "Love Jah & Live", accompanied by Ruben I) Read the Bible and love Jah all the time, whatever you do, whatever you say, love Jah the father and be sure you will be safe! Rastafari is the almighty!
