Bubblers is the embodiment of friendliness and good vibes. Keyboard player of the Ruff Cutt Band, he also handles the backing vocals. A gifted musician, Carlton Ogilvie is a pianist, bassist and drummer, but also a producer and sound engineer. He can be found on many Jetstar productions. He has backed the greatest and is part of the legendary Ruff Cutt Band, often considered the best reggae band in the United Kingdom. A meeting with a heavyweight, at the Marley Heritage Festival.
Reggaefrance / Can you introduce yourself? Carlton Bubblers / Hello, my name is "Bubblers", Carlton Ogilvie. Known as "Bubblers", keyboardist of the Ruff Cut Band. I'm also a producer and engineer; I do all those wonderful things you can do in music.
Your impressions of the show (Marley Heritage Festival)? The show was good, the crowd was up for it. It was fun, we really didn't waste our time... as you can hear behind me, the crowd is going all out! We played for Michael Prophet, Lloyd Brown and Starkey Banton, it was really very good...
You played for almost 3 hours tonight! Yes, that's a long time. I can't feel my feet any more! It was really very good and people were very happy with what we did.
Today is an event in tribute to Bob Marley. Where do you place him in your career? He's a very strong influence for many in the Ruff Cutt. Personally, I didn't listen to Bob Marley until the middle of my school years. I didn't listen to his early songs, but I knew who Bob Marley was. I didn't really listen until the album "Rastaman Vibration"... In my career, he's a very strong influence, and he's one of the few I was never able to work with; I miss him. I think he rests in a wonderful place and sees us all keeping reggae music alive. We love you Bob, and we're here, we keep going!
What are the Ruff Cutt Band's projects? We're about to build a new studio. The studio we had was... closed. Stories between those who own the buildings and those who manage them. Anyway, we had to leave, we don't have a place for the moment, it's a problem. In London, building land is very, very expensive. We're working on a plan to get ourselves a studio; it takes a bit of luck but we'll get there! (...) At the same time, we're working a lot for Jet Star with Tony Philips. I work for other artists. We're still active; Kenton "Fish" Brown, our bass player, takes part in lots of productions in Jamaica. There's someone we work with, our manager Snake, he's our bredren. He makes his own compositions and we work on the production with the Ruff Cutt Band, he's the one singing. You'll be hearing about him over the next six or seven months.
