Prison for Sizzla
on Thursday, February 03rd 2005 - 122 605 views
Sizzla was sentenced yesterday to 2 weeks in prison for a verbal slip on stage, said to have taken place on 26 December during his appearance at the "Christmas night show East festival" (More details).
At his hearing yesterday, Sizzla reportedly refused to carry out the 15 days of community service requested and told the presiding judge that he had no intention of apologising for his remarks on stage. The court therefore decided to convert the sentence into a custodial one.
The news has stirred up a fair amount of controversy in Jamaica, and specifically in August Town, Sizzla's neighbourhood, where demonstrations have taken place. The debate concerns artists' freedom of expression, but also the influence they can have on Jamaican youth.
