Reality seems to be catching up with Mavado: having built most of his persona around a gangster liturgy, he is now accused of illegal possession and use of a firearm on several occasions.
Although he was in London alongside Bounty Killer only last week and another show with Lady Saw is planned in Trinidad next weekend, Mavado has been held in police custody by the Jamaican police since last night. The self-proclaimed “Gully God” is expected to remain behind bars for at least the next 24 hours and faces a heavy sentence if the evidence against him is borne out.
These accusations concern events dating back to last July and had initially seen the singer released for lack of solid evidence against him. Even if it is not the first time Mavado has come up against the law, things look very serious this time, as he must appear before the Gun Court and could therefore return to prison as soon as sentence is passed.
