Victory in song
on Monday, August 25th 2008 - 11 017 views
Although the women missed the chance of one last gold medal in the 4x100m relay because of a botched baton change, the men closed their Beijing Olympics campaign in style, winning the same event with bewildering ease and setting a new world record of 37.10s.
Usain Bolt now goes down in history as the first athlete to win gold in all three sprint events at the same Olympic Games, setting a new world record each time.
As expected, the local singers were quick to celebrate this string of victories in their own way, and anthems in praise of the champions are starting to pour out. After the encouragement songs from Mavado and Wayne Marshall, Elephant Man, Cocoa Tea, D’Angel, Konshens, Queen Paula, Stacious, Charly Black, Mikeylous, Prestige, Rula Brown and Ras Negus I have all already recorded a single in honour of the island’s male and female runners.
