Glen Adams has passed away
on Thursday, December 23rd 2010 - 5 542 views
Reggae loses another pioneer with the passing of Glen Adams. Singer, organist with the Hippy Boys and the Upsetters, author of the lyrics to Marley's Mr Brown and producer, Glen Adams died on the evening of 17 December at the University Hospital of the West Indies. He was 65.
Born on 27 November 1945, he grew up like so many others forming bands and took part in the "Opportunity Hour" talent contest in 1961, where Coxsone noticed him and let him record a first track, Wonder Thirst, at the Federal Recording Studio. With Ken Boothe he formed the duo Ken & Glen, notably backing Stranger Cole on his hit Uno dos tres, and finishing 2nd in the Festival Song Competition in 1966. He recorded a few tracks with the Pioneers, but kept his job as a tailor. At the same time he became Treasure Isle's talent scout for Duke Reid, for whom he was already starting to fill in on keyboards.
In October 1968, at a session with producer Bunny Striker Lee, the musicians failed to turn up, determined to get paid. Glen Adams was then asked to take the piano (he would eventually swap the organ with Lloyd Charmers). His career as a musician thus began. He was notably on Lester Sterling & Stranger Cole's Bangarang, then formed the Hippy Boys with brothers Aston & Carlton Barrett and Alva Reggie Lewis on guitar. They would play among others for Max Romeo, John Holt (Stick By Me) and Delroy Wilson (Better Must Come, Cool Operator).
Playing under several different names, they recorded mainly for Bunny Lee, but also Joe Gibbs and Lee Perry. It was with the latter that they became the Upsetters, backing the Wailers (Peter, Bunny & Bob). Glen Adams is the author of the lyrics to Mr Brown. He also sometimes played for producer Herman Chin Loy (Aquarius), credited under the name of... Augustus Pablo.
In 1972, when Aston & Carlton Barrett left Perry to join Marley's Wailers, who had gone to Blackwell, Glen Adams flew off to Brooklyn, setting up his label Capo at the same time as a new group, the Blue Grass Experience. He also worked with the New York producers of Wackies (Brad Osbourne and Lloyd Barnes). Later, he turned to rap and R&B, worked notably with Shaggy and kept touring. Having suffered a heart attack earlier in the year, his health was fragile.
