From prison, Vybz Kartel accuses the police

From his prison cell, Vybz Kartel is firing broadsides at the Jamaican authorities. Behind bars since 30 September 2011, the deejay has written a long letter in which he claims that the country's police forces have done everything to keep him locked up.

From prison, Vybz Kartel accuses the police

No fewer than five handwritten pages in which Vybz Kartel accuses the police of lies, threats and tampering with evidence in order to stop him obtaining bail: "Everything about my case is a fabrication".

"In 2011, he writes, I was charged with ordering the murder of Barrington "Bossie" Burton by Lenburgh McDonald. Weeks later, a so-called witness told the defence that he had been physically assaulted and threatened by the police to say that I was involved in the death of Bossie Burton. Several days later, he made a new statement saying that since the first statement, he had been receiving death threats by telephone.

Several days after my first murder charge, I was charged with a new murder (Clive "Lizard" Williams). In that case, the police (through a Senior Superintendent who was later charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice in another case) campaigned every Monday morning on a certain television channel, claiming they had DNA samples incriminating me, which eventually proved negative seven months later. They also led the public to believe they had video recordings of me and my co-accused killing Williams. I would like to add that the police have made many damaging remarks about me. The most notable would be: "Since his arrest, the community is a safer place".

"Everything is fabricated"
Vybz Kartel also denounces a police report according to which three mobile phones were found in his cell on 22 January. "On Saturday 16 February, my lawyer Mrs Valerie Neita Robertson showed me a document drawn up by the prosecutor after a hearing to obtain my bail. This document, signed by a senior member of the police, states that three cellular phones were found in my cell during a search on 22 January 2013. My bail was refused mainly on the basis of this blatant lie by the Jamaican police."

And he concludes: "Everything to do with my case is a fabrication, everything is fabricated. I don't know whose corn I may have stepped on in the past, but it is now coming back to haunt me."

The deejay also says he has written two letters to INDECOM (the Independent Commission of Investigations, the equivalent of the IGS in France, editor's note).

He will be back in court on 27 May, to answer the charge of murdering Clive "Lizard" Williams.
