Record sales keep sinking
on Monday, September 08th 2008 - 6 876 views
Record sales keep sinking: revenue from recorded music fell by 13% in France over the first half of 2008, according to the Observatoire de la musique. The fall hits the singles market hardest, which has been ravaged (-43%, with 2 million copies sold), while albums are down 9.1% in volume (-14% in value).
With the Création et Internet bill, which introduces the notion of "graduated response" to combat illegal downloading, due to be examined by Parliament this autumn, legal downloading still accounts for only a small share of purchases: 6% of total sales (worth 30.2 million euros). It is nonetheless growing, having doubled compared with 2007, but remains far from the levels reached in the United States, where the digital music market is said to account for between 25% and 30% of total sales.
