The endemic violence in Jamaica does not spare artists. The dancer David Alexander Smith, known as Ice, died on 26 December, shot in the street by individuals who stole his car. He was notably the inventor of the Gully Creepa dance (performed by Usain Bolt for a worldwide audience at the Beijing Olympics). His death caused real distress in Jamaica, and brought back bad memories. The Black Roses Crew, of which Ice was a member, had already been bereaved in 2001 by the death of its leader William “Willie Haggart” Moore and in 2005 by that of the superstar Bogle (news of 21/01/2005).
