Fire at the Elysée Montmartre
on Tuesday, March 22nd 2011 - 6 673 views
A fire broke out this morning at the Elysée Montmartre in Paris, a venue well known to reggae fans for hosting most of the Jamaicans passing through the capital. There were no casualties in the blaze, which mobilised 16 fire stations and 26 engines.
The fire started at around eight in the morning, in the administrative offices above the hall. It is said to have spread to a fabric shop located behind the venue. The fire was brought under control at around 11am. The damage, difficult to assess for now, could be considerable.
Among the upcoming events due to take place at the Elysée Montmartre were the Paris Xtrem Fest (a metal festival planned for this weekend) but also Médine, Asian Dub Foundation, Redman & Naughty by Nature, Busta Rhymes and the Twinkle Brothers.
The Elysée Montmartre, which opened in 1807, was taken over by Garance Productions in 1989. The venue has been a listed historic monument since 1988.
