The Epic of African Music

The excellent book "L'épopée de la musique africaine" ("The Epic of African Music"), written by the journalist and author Florent Mazzoleni, will soon be available in a new, updated and expanded edition.

The Epic of African Music

Across fourteen countries, from Senegal to Angola, from Cesaria Evora to Youssou N'Dour, from Fela to Alpha Blondy by way of Salif Keita, "L'épopée de la musique africaine" charts the successive transformations of African music.

"At the start of the 1960s, the author recounts, urbanisation heralds a new era: that of a society that wants to break definitively with colonialism. It is the beginning of a golden age for African music… Traditional rhythms evolve, transform, grow richer and spread, giving birth to a new sound steeped in Cuban music, pop, soul, rock and funk."

Illustrated with rare photos, previously unseen album sleeves and many iconographic documents, the new edition, available on 7 March from Hors-Collection, notably offers an updated discography and a new chapter on the music of Ethiopia.
